Hi I’m so excited learning how to play piano or keyboard I’ve always wanted to learn how to play
I’m just waiting for my piano to arrive so I can start my first lesson. I also sing and play drums thank you so much I can see all positive comments Watch is great to see.
Thank you Frank — enjoy your journey 🙂
My 7 year old is curious about the black keys:) what are they used for 🙂
Hi Mishika – To put it simply, the black keys are used for more complex music or when you want something to sound different than it does with the white keys. At first we use all the white keys as the collection of notes to learn (this collection is called the “key” of C Major, technically) and then down the road we learn how to build other collections of notes.
When I was 7 yrs. old I took piano lesson; Gave up after the 5th lesson. I was so confused. I totally/ completely erased from my mind the thought of ever learning to play. I think my love for learning how to play is rooted within me. So, I enrolled my granddaughter for piano lesson. To my dismay, her teacher was just like my teacher when I was 7. So my granddaughter gave up on her piano lesson. When I got your posting on fb, my hope was ignited. I enjoyed the 1st lesson and I’m sure my granddaughter will like it too. Big thanks and God bless you!
Thank you Jocy I hope you enjoy!
Really clear and easy to understand.

My first lesson was great!
Thank you so much. I have had piano lessons in my primary years and continued intermittently. In my later years I finally stopped all together. I even sold my piano with thoughts that it’s so difficult to learn it. But seeing your lessons today, I think I would like to continue on. Meanwhile I jhave just ordered a piano to be delivered next week.

I remember my kids learning this piece, now here I am in lockdown at 52 learning what they did 20 years ago. Love it Thank you
Thanks a lot Matt. These videos are very interesting and helpful. What would be your advice to someone who wants to learn how to play but has a pretty tight schedule? For at least how many minutes can one practice daily?
Hi Christopher – The real secret is consistency. I always recommend to my busy adult students that they find the same time every day to practice rather than only aiming for a certain amount. (e.g. after I get home from work, I will practice). This way you have the habit of practicing every day and this will tend to expand or contract based on your other commitments. But if you demand of yourself a set length of time “at some point” you’ll tend to simply put it off indefinitely. I hope that helps!
Thank you for explaining your knowledge in such a nice way. Think I will gain lots of pleasure in trying to explore it on my own!!!
Glad you are enjoying the lessons Kokkie!
Hi Matt, I am waiting for my Piano to be delivered, not sure when that will be, will I be able to access these Videos at a later stage??Thanks very much for the lessons, they are very easy to understand..Kind regards, Carol.
Yes – all the free lessons are available through the links in the e-mails I sent. And if you enroll in the extended course that is a lifetime membership as well so you can review the lessons for as long as you like. Thanks Carol!
Thanks. Very informative
Great!

I like how nice and slow he does the lesson. Very helpful
Hello,
these lessons are quite good, im enjoying them. Thanks alot Matt.
I have been willing to learn piano but didn’t know where to go. This is helpful thank you so much.
Thank you,you are a good teacher
Thank you Kotie!
Thank you.looks interesting. My grandson has autism. Non verbal only 7.how do you teach him. His got a big keyboard.
Hi Una — this all depends on the context. I have worked with autistic students before and for each one you have to take them on their own basis and really consider how they learn, which can vary greatly. Patience and inspiring a love of music will go a long way. I wish I could give more specific advice!
I know some notes from my childhood id love to learn more im so exited
Great Karen I hope you enjoy!!
Thst was good, I had learned thst already, but it was good to listen to you. I have been practicing piano for a little over a week, so I am a real greenhorn. Looking forward to lesson 2
Very clear. Your videos moves at a good pace for the beginner. Important that I can see which notes you are playing. Not possible in many other beginner videos.

Love today’s lesson
Thank you I’m glad you loved it!
My biggest question is
Will you teach how to read actual music notes
Thanks
Cindy
Hi Cindy – We start without reading notes, but then in lessons 4-9 we do start reading notes, yes. Hope you enjoy the lessons!
I liked the lesson of today. Thank You!
Thank you Alexa! I’m glad you liked it.
I love this.. can you send the next lesson please!
Thanks Isaiah – it’s coming tomorrow morning!
Love it so much. Enjoying every bit of it.
Thanks Anthony!
Good
Thank you!
Thank you so much I really enjoy your teaching!
Thank you Quinton!
Yes, loved the lesson, but my problem is with my left hand. My middle finger spasms out. L.H of course. No problem with the RH. What can I work on to control these spasm. My left hand feels like someone else’s hand compared to my right hand, especially on stepwise scalar movements ascending and descending. Why does it happen and what exercises can I do to get control of this. It happens when I’m doing Hanon exercises especially and I’m not studying with anyone. Ex bone player and arranger
Hi Richard – this could be due to a lot of thing (some of them medical and of course outside my expertise!) If you just feel like you have lesson control with your left hand, that isn’t too far out of the ordinary. In many cases, watching your hand position, wrist position, and practicing very very slowly and tension free will help alleviate some of these control issues. The main problem is that this take quite a lot of patience 🙂
Just loved it,ur a good teacher
Thank you!
Thank you so much I really did enjoy the lesson I’m going to be practicing until I really learned to play it well I was wondering though if you could answer this question I have a Baldwin fun machine it’s a combination of a piano and organ is there is this the same as a piano hope you can answer my question
Thanks Nancy! Anything that is not a piano you can practice on, although some of my more detailed technical advice only pertains to real pianos because the key mechanism is different. I hope that helps.
Bonjour Matt,
I really enjoyed this first lesson as you explained the basic so well that makes music not so frightening to learn 🙂
I look forward to the second lesson!
Thanks.
M-A.
A very direct, concise and helpful coaching on piano for beginners.
Hi Matt. I really appreciate you offering free piano lessons. That is a real blessing I will be taking advantage of it.I have a great interest in learning the piano. I also live on Texas. You seem to have patience. Ok looking forward to lesson 25. Lol. Gotta have some humor

Thank you for an easy approach to learning the basic fundamentals of piano. I like that it is not overwhelming. That got for taking the time to record these. Turning 33 on Saturday so my wife got me an electric keyboard so I can begin this journey!
Hey I’m glad you enjoyed the lessons!!
Very helpful. I’m currently taking piano lessons and the tip you give are very helpful. Thank you for what you do

Awesome Sally — let those neurons grow 🙂
Loving learning. It’s great to be able to read the piano rather than counting the piano
Hi Matt,
I am a fresh pensioner at age 67, classic music lover, but never approached a piano for more than 5 minutes, until this month. In childhood I took a few lessons on violin, but I have been a lazy music student. I still remember something on tonalities : sharps Fa, Do, Sol, Re… and molls Si, Mi, La, Re… ( I remember La is A ; Do is C… ) . Now, there is probably my last chance to learn something on piano, in parallel with one of my grand-daughters. At the end of last month I acquired a new digital piano, Clavinova, with built-in lessons with extracts from 50 classical musical masterpieces. After twenty-something hours of exercising, I’m very excited of the little progress I have made. I almost may
follow recorded music on the partiture. I almost may play Ode to Joy on right hand without looking on my fingers but on the partiture. But on left hand and coordination I’m very dumb. I’m happy not to be alone in my age class and I’m eager to follow your lessons.
Thanks This s so helpful ! We at church are teaching our youth instruments . The piano being one of them ! I play by ear so I can play a little so as you teach , I also can share your lessons so they can learn .
Thank you
Thank you
Surely, I like this lesson and do appreciate for your teaching method.
Thank you!

Awesome Melissa – I’m glad you liked it!
This is just awesome! Thank you Matt

Am enjoying the lesson,thanks Matt
I have wanted to learn piano since my daughters were small and taking lessons, I simply didn’t have time to practice. Now that I am retired and have a piano that no one plays anymore I thought it would be great to learn. I like the way you explain every step starting with the way it would be best to learn the names of the keys in relation to the black keys. I will enjoy practicing the first part of Ode to Joy!
Thank you so much for making it fun and easy to learn!
Thank you, I will continue. I have already learned so much, and I would like to continue Please.
Yes I like the lesson
Thank you David!
I learned to play the piano as a young girl. I played duets with a girlfriend on many occasions. I have not used my skills..and therefore, have lost them. I enjoyed this first lesson, although it is a review for me. I’m looking forward to watching and learning from you. I want to be able to play with ease by the time I am finished. Thanks so much for offering this course.
Thank you Jan I hope you enjoy these lessons!
Hi Matt,
I am 52 year old Grandma of 2. This is my very first time touching the piano.. didn’t know anything about it. But you make it so easy and interesting. By watching your first lesson, now I know the letters of those Whites Keys. I am excited.. can’t wait to learn and to play a whole song for my grandkids…and maybe teach them to play someday.
Thank you so much for your free lessons. Appreciate your good teaching approach. Have a great day!!
Sincerely,
Lina Medlin
Thank you Lina – I’m glad you are enjoying the lessons!

Wow, learning to play the piano has been one of my biggest goals because, I attend church and would really love learning to play really well and likely become the guy sitting at the piano in church and also teach my son, therefore my wife, our son and I could practice out of my old church hymnal, I am very grateful for your free piano lessons.
Sincerely, Corey Simpson
I am 68 years old and always wanted to learn how to play the piano. I do like your teaching. Do you have this on dvd so I can learn and keep?

I’m so very impressed how you teach such important points in a very simple and systematic way.. as not to overwhelm the learner with too much information before one can handle , thoroughly enjoyed your first lesson . Thank you
I learned how to regonize the white keys from the location of the set of black keys. I’m loving these lessons already. Thank You so much
I am ready for lesson 2. Please send it soon

This is my second attempt to learn to play. I appreciate how you emphasized learning the name of each key before moving on. I believe this will help me be more successful this time.
Yes! Slow and steady wins the race 🙂
I want to help me 5 year old great niece, and myself, learn to play. She is here every other weekend, so this may take awhile.
I’m back to the basics with you! I was made to take when I was young and for 9 years! I did recitals and had superior at them. However, I just hope things come back to me because I am ashamed that I don’t remember how to play!
You are a good instructor. Your procedure is very clear and easy to comprehend. Thank you millions. I will learn more from you.

I really like the way you say the notes so I know which ones you are playing. I have never played the piano or keyboard and I want so badly to learn how but I am really struggling with learning. I am looking forward to your lessons and I am really hoping that I can finally learn how to play. Thank you for your lessons.
Loved it. It really gets the student thinking about rhythm and counting without even knowing it! Thanks for your help.
You have already taught me a lot thank you I’m looking forward to the next round
Awesome!
Hi Matt, I think I can learn a lot from you. I like the fact that you take your time and do repeats and let us stop and try it after watching you.

Awesome Janice – enjoy the lessons!
I know standard keys & play by ear. What I want to learn is transitions & how to make right & left hands work together. I sound choppy when playing.
Awesome – make sure you are practicing slow enough so that you can think ahead – this helps a lot when you find your playing is a bit choppy!
So good to start my piano again after having in school.now retired and looking forward to wonderful hours in front of my piano..thank you!!
Trudi – awesome! Glad you’re enjoying the lessons 🙂
This was such a great start and I would love to do the second lesson. Thank you so much for helping me
Thank you Lauren – I’m glad you’re enjoying the lessons!
I have always wanted to play the piano and today I decided to start learning about the keys. I watched Lesson one today and found it very interesting and fun to watch. I printed out 4 copies of the piano key chart and made my own keyboard with 52 white and 36 black keys. I feel really excited about moving forward with your lessons. Hopefully one day I can will be able to play a complete song and scratch this off my bucket list.
Thank you, Janet
Janet – Awesome! Good for you for diving in. Hope you enjoy the rest of the lessons 🙂
Thank you for providing this for us for free. Much appreciated!
Thank you Hunter!
Thank you! This is great!
Thank you Mary!!
Thank you for an awesome lesson. This is probably my third or maybe even fourth time starting piano and I can’t remember ever learning how to recognize the notes according where they are located in reference to the black notes. I may have been told this before but I don’t remember and I think this is such a great tool to know.
I actually think I may learn how to play with this kind of teaching. Thank you for a great Lesson #1.
Thank you Shirley — I’m really glad you enjoy the lessons and my teaching!
Thank you! That was very easy.
Thank you Paricia!
Thank you. Your videos are helping me learn the piano.
Thank you Andy! Glad you’re enjoying the lessons.
I have learned to recognize and memorize the white keys using the black keys, instead of always naming them quickly in my head before each note. I can already see how important this will be.
Yes you’re going to find this helps you a lot down the road!
I love the lesson. I have tried several other lessons from other people and learn nothing; but this is the first time I feel like I am learning something that I can actually play.Thank you so much.

I’m a very beginner, so I learned fingers 1-5 starting at middle “C” with 1(thumb) and then D(2) E(3) F(4) G(5) A
C being one below the two black keys, D between the two black and E above the two black keys.
My wrist is getting tired real fast 🙂 Thanks for a very good lesson!
Hi Gerald — you’ll find some material on keeping your forearm relaxed and aligned in the coming lessons that you might find helpful! Cheers-Matt
very nice, bringing back what I learned as a child. Thank you. Andrea
Awesome! Thank you Andrea.
I knew the white keys but becoming comfortable with where each were located takes practice. I liked the way you related the black keys to the white keys. Loved the first lesson and excited to move on to lesson 2.

That was well taught. It given at a steady pace. I have been able to play by ear but want to learn playing & music correctly as my repertoire is very limited & so I am starting again. Hope we can get rid of my poor habits such as using my fingers correctly. Thank you & looking forward to the next lesson
Cool lesson! I got over the hurdle of knowing which keys are which.. how easy was that?! lol. G and A in between the three blacks, respectively, d between the two blacks, c to the left e to the right, f to the left of the three, b to the right.. wow.. all these years….
I have enjoyed my first lesson very much and I have learned my numbers as well as my letters. The only problem that I have is that I still want to play for hours and hours. Sometimes I play until I have a headache and then that will let me know that I need to take a rest. I am truly grateful that you are giving these free lessons. Thank you and may God bless you. Until our next lesson. Have a bless night.
Thank you for your tips and things to practice. Your method is very precise and starts at a doable pace. Looking forward to next lesson.
Amayzing!!!! Love these lessons, thank you SO much! I was given an incredible piano, have always wanted to learn and as an early childhood teacher I cannot afford lessons. These lessons are invaluable! Thank you thank you thank you.
This really helped me. I am fourteen and have wanted to learn piano ever since I was two. But my family could never afford it. I really appreciate you giving people free lessons. You have no idea how happy you have made me! I can’t wait to learn more! 🙂

Hey, thumbs up. I think I am going to enjoy this lesson. I am however using an online piano so I have to go to the site to get to my “piano”, but I think I will be able to wiggle it.
Love the lesson so far.

i really enjoyed the lesson, and i also learned somthing new.thanks matt you are a good techer.
Thank you this was great. I’m 52 – played trumpet through HS and only dabbled with guitar since. I have been saying for decades that I wish I learned how to play piano as it seems to be an instrument where you don’t need to keep some sort of lip or callouses on your fingers. This morning I woke up and said I am going to teach myself piano.
I thankfully stumbled upon your great lessons via the google monster. You are an excellent teacher, very clear. I look forward to seeing where I can go with this.
Thank you.
This is going to be so much fun! Thanks for the free lessons.

Hey everyone! I hope you enjoyed this lesson. Please leave a comment below letting me know what you learned or if you have any questions.
I liked the lessons.
Great!!
Knowing where the fingers had to go made playing so much easier! I have tried other sites to try playing piano but this is the first one that off the bat actually taught me where to place my fingers. Thank you!
Great Avia — I’m glad you found this helpful!
