When do you practice? 5

I’ve been talking with several students lately about what time of day they practice in. When do you practice?

For me, the best time to practice is the time that will happen every day. Just like going to the gym, practice is something that can easily be put of just “one more day.” Which quickly turns into “one more week”

For me the best time to practice is first thing in the morning. A lot of my students who work full time 9-5 jobs say the same thing. Its tough to get up at first, but the reward of having freedom in the evening and seeing real improvement over time makes it worth it.

Whenever you practice, make it consistent! Don’t make piano a “floating” item on your agenda, but rather a part of your daily routine. Not only will you achieve more over the long haul, you’ll come to see your practice routine as an enjoyable part of your daily life.

So Pianobloggers, I’m curious to hear your thoughts. When do you practice? Are you fresher in the morning or do you use it to relax in the evening? When are you able to be more consistent? Let me know!

Hi Squareberry – You’d be surprised what some people do to fit in practice. I’ve had students reschedule their workdays just to fit in an hour in the morning. I even once had a student who took a keyboard to work so that she could practice during lunch! (I would not recommend practicing during the actual workday however 🙂 Like you say, I also find that 15 minutes of really focused practice squeezed in here and there can accomplish a lot — although as a regular practice schedule it isn’t the best. Thanks, I’m glad you enjoy the blog!

Hey, notice you said you have students with 9-5 jobs, just like me!
How do they find time to practice and do they improve more slowly because of their jobs? I ask because I am a working adult, and trying to take my LRSM exam in one years time, and I really wish I could practice like, 6 hours a day, but its hard to find time.
To answer your question though, I try to practice whenever I am able to squeeze time out. Like after work, 8-midnight, weekend afternoons, and sometimes I wake up at 6am to practice for an hour if I have piano lesson that evening. I wish I had more time! S(sorry about the whine.) I think there is no best time for me as long as I am focused during the practice.
By the way, I teach piano too…chanced across your blog while looking for some resources. A good read, thanks!
