Welcome to your second piano lesson!
(Click here if you want to view the first piano lesson.)
So you’ve been practicing your first half of the Ode to Joy. Let’s talk about counting – one of the fundamental aspects of all music. I’m going to introduce you to four note values in the video below:
Now let’s take what we learned about counting and learn about the basic rhythm found in the Ode to Joy:
We’re about to learn the second half of Ode to Joy, but first, it’s very important that we learn some elements of piano technique. This subject is often glossed over, but if you want a good foundation it’s important to build it into every lesson. So we are going to talk about two subjects: Posture at the Piano, and Finding a Relaxed Hand Position:
Now we are finally ready to learn the second half of Ode to Joy!
That’s all for today, folks. Watch out for lesson 3 where we’ll add some left hand chords to our music – it’s coming soon! Until then . . . practice, practice, practice.
And if you liked this lesson or have a question, please leave a comment below!

Thanks Matt, this is amazing. You are really helping to demystify my initial fears as an adult who was incapable of learning Piano. I am excited, you made a hard stuff here so easy for me. I hope the subsequent lessons are gonna be good.
Particularly enjoyed your lesson on correct posture….just started and realised my positioning and stance at the piano was really poor…thankfully corrected in time….many thanks

Hi Matt,
Thank you for the lesson on reading notes, counting and posture. This will be very helpful especially when faced with a song where you don’t know the melody.
The Ode to Joy is such a wonderful song, it is hard to believe that I am starting to learn to play it…well, the right-hand part anyway!
Your teaching style is great….you take your time in explaining things, and show the visuals too.
Take care, all the best.
Carol
Thank you Carol I’m really glad you enjoyed the lesson!
That was good, very easy to comprehend
Very Nice. I want to start but i do not have a key board. Can you suggest what type of a key board i should buy ( or maybe rent). I am a total beginner ….I have never tried an instrument before.
Should I get a 61 keys or 88 keys keyboard ?
Thank you.
Hi Sadia – I actually wrote a blog post about this you may find helpful: https://www.pianoblog.com/how-to-buy-a-piano/ – Cheers
Hi Matt,
Thanks, liked it.

You are a great teacher. Thank you for the posture lesson. It just tells me I can’t have my keyboard on my reading table as that won’t give me the right posture.

Hi! I love learning how to play the piano with you. I want to continue lessons with you.I will receive my third free lesson tomorrow. I don’t have a credit card, so might have to pay by Pal and I don’t know what this even is or how I would go about setting it up, or where I’d do that I I need to know is everything online and you download or would anything be shipped from the USA and if so how does that work? Would it be shipped free as I live in Canada? I need to know all the information to be able to continue. Also since this is in the USA what currency would I have to pay in?
Please can you help me and let me know the answers to my questions.
I hope that I can continue my lessons.
Jacqueline
Hi Jacqueline – I’m glad you’re enjoying the lessons and would love to have you continue! There is an option to enroll using paypal and because everything is online there is nothing to ship. Cheers!

Iβm so excited about this program. My request to join the Facebook group has not been approved yet and is love running join.
Iβve always wanted to learn how to play but have often heard itβs impossible to learn as an adult. We recently moved my in-laws piano to our home and Iβve decided itβs time to learn! Iβm really enjoying the lessons and feel like it is possible to learn since you make it easy to understand the concept through application of the learning as we go. Thank you!

A bit confused about the second 1/2 of “Ode to Joy”.Does it end with 4th bit e d c c?
Hi Garry – I think it will make a lot more sense in the next lesson when you can put both parts together π

Very good lesson! it feels so good to be able to play a tiny piece of Beethoven after only 2 lessons :).
Glad you liked it! π
Lesson 2 has proved very useful, especially the injected seating position and the valuing of some of the notes: whole, half, quarter, and half(dot).
Thanks Emmanuel – I’m glad you found it helpful.
Matt,
I want to thank you for these free beginners lesssons. Learning the keyboards is something I have always wanted to do all my life but never took the time to do so. Iβm hoping I can pick it up naturally and with ease. Some of the online courses can tend to get overwhelming for me, so Iβm hoping I have better luck with yours. So far so good.
David
Hi David – I hope you found the lessons helpful. Thank you!
I understand the finger numbers on the right hand..on the left is it the opposite notes? Like for instance finger 5 would C..Is that right?
Hi Polly — the finger numbers are independent of the notes…for example your pinky (in either hand) is always finger 5, and your thumb in either hand is always finger 1 … I hope that makes sense.
Hi Matt. Thank you for this lesson. Looking forward to lesson 3. It is helpful when you say the key as you touch.
Hi Matt. It is very helpful that you say the key as you play. It was hard following your hand until you named the keys then I understood. Thank you for this lesson.
When will lesson 3 be available? Im loving this
Awesome – you should get it by tomorrow! π

In the 1st lesson you said 1 2 3 4 5 = CDEFG
What fingers do you use to play A B on either side of those 5 notes?
